How to Adopt a Child in British Columbia

If you are a resident of BC, you must register with a British Columbia Adoption Agency and complete a homestudy to adopt a child.

To adopt a child from another country (an international adoption) you need to decide which country you would like to adopt from. Today these countries change regularly. International adoption from any country may stop, start, slow down or speed up, often without notice. For a current list of countries, which are open to adoption, see the Intercountry Adoption Programs on the Sunrise website.

To adopt a child who is currently in the care of the British Columbia Government, you must register with the Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD).

To adopt a stepchild you will need to have a report on the child's views prepared for the Court if the child is between 7 and 12 years of age. For information on how to do this please contact us.

To adopt a relative's child there are different procedures depending on whether the child lives in Canada or in another country. If the child is in Canada it can be a simpler process than if the child lives overseas. For assistance and advice on this complex topic, please contact us.
