Brett & Wyatt
OUR PROMISE TO YOU:
We promise to be there for y/our child, to grow with them, and to love them unconditionally. We promise to be their biggest fans, their loudest cheerleaders, and be someone who will listen to them and be there for them. We promise to use all our compassion, heart, wisdom and skills to provide them with the most supportive and safest home possible given the world we live in. We promise to honour y/our child’s true self including the culture where they come from and support them through lifes’ challenges and tides. ‘Love is love’ will always be true in our home and family. We promise to foster a relationship between birth parent(s) and child, if that is something you are seeking (and we know this can always evolve and change).
Wyatt has a big heart, and is one of the most personable introverts you’ll ever meet. He works from home as a Medical Office Assistant for a provincial non-profit, though his true calling it to be a parent, to be active in his community, and to practice the home arts. He loves canning foods and homesteading, swimming in the ocean and nearby lakes, and growing the most delicious tomatoes North of the 49th parallel. Wyatt is an avid reader and is excited about teaching our future kiddo to read, including reading them stories before bed every night just like his Mom did when he was growing up.
Brett is a soft-spoken, kind hearted person, with a keen listening ear. Brett works as a counsellor, and has a Masters of Social Work. Brett has worked in the social service field since 2004 working in the areas of: disability supports, environmental non-profits, low-income housing, 2SLGBTQIA+ health, mental health, and research. Brett enjoys riding bikes, being outside, gardening and caring for the fruit trees in the backyard, and crafting.
In our spare time we love to spend time in nature going hiking (snowshoeing in winter), kayaking in the ocean, and biking around the community. We also spend a lot of time in our gardens, growing vegetables, berries, fruit trees and flowers and we are always learning new things. We are excited to teach our kids about being connected to the land, the things we eat, and to each other. We have 5 egg-laying chickens and a dog (Prada), and hope to involve our kids in their care both to see where their food comes from and to learn about relationships, responsibility and care. We also love cooking and preserving, and spend a lot of time canning and dehydrating the fruits of our harvests.
ABOUT OUR FAMILY:
Brett was raised in Calgary, and descended from French Canadian and German Farmers, and Irish and English settlers. We are lucky that his Mom lives just a 4-minute drive away. She was raised on Vancouver Island. Brett’s sister also lives in town, which means we have a lot of family and support nearby. Brett and Wyatt visit Brett’s Dad, his wife Nuy and their two kids in Calgary as often as they can.
Wyatt was raised in California, coming from Portuguese and Swedish settlers. Wyatt immigrated to Canada in 2018 after he and Brett got married. He lived in Portland for about 15 years prior to that, and loves the rainy, moody weather of the temperate rainforest we live in. Wyatt’s Dad is in the process of moving to be closer to Wyatt and Brett, and will hopefully be living in the area very soon.
Wyatt and Brett met through mutual friends after Brett attended a conference for work in Portland in 2013, where Wyatt was living at the time. We became fast friends and later started dating in 2016 and….as they say, the rest is history! For our parents, this would be their first grandchild and they are all VERY excited (did we say VERY? We mean VERY!) to become grandparents. We adopted our dog Prada in 2020, she is a 6-year-old Frenchie-mix, she brings a lot of joy to our home. She has been around kids many times, and loves cuddling, and going for walks by the ocean.
OUR HOME & COMMUNITY:
We live in a small tight-knit community in a cozy seaside town in the central part of Vancouver Island. We bought our first home in 2020, and are really excited to expand our family here. We have multiple friends in town with kids, and can’t wait to take our kids to the beach and playground a block away or to the skate park together. Our future child will be able to walk or ride their bike to school (as well as to Grandma’s), and we will take them to nearby cities and communities to go to cultural events, concerts, and gain new experiences as is possible given the pandemic.
We are excited to foster all creative, science-oriented, math, and other future talents and interests our future kiddo has. The area we live in has a lot to offer in terms of after-school programming and outdoor education. We can’t wait to enroll them in things like Scouts and/or Girl Guides, summer camps, and other extracurricular activities if they are interested in those things. We also want to listen to our future kiddo about what their interests and passions are and foster those things.
We are really glad that adoptions in BC are open, as that is our preference. We’d like you to be as involved in the kiddo’s life as much or as little as you’d like. We know life is always changing, and this may also change. We are open to visits with you and your extended family/loved ones, as well as email, text, and/or mailed updates. We also want to acknowledge that y/our child may have questions and we will always be open and honest about where they come from.
Thank you very much for taking the time to read our profile. We appreciate your time and trust.
